Default motor questions

i have a 1987 ford ranger with the 2.9l motor, im not sure what trans is in it but it an automatic, its 4x4, and i was wondering what motors will bolt right up to it, cause the 2.9 is shot, and i am wondering what motors i can look for that bolt up with no issues, any help is appreciated. thanks, jake

The only motor that can bolt up with little modification would be another 2.9L. Even then going between years you can run into some differences, but minor ones.

2.8L was carbed, but bad choice for a replacement. Would have to wire up and do something with fuel delivery since the pump is mechanical.

2.9L was EFI.

4.0L is EFI, but you'll want to use the transmission (4.0L A4LD is a bit different), engine wiring swap (big difference in 86-88), computer, etc. You'd have to make a decision on what you think would be the best way of handling the dash/driver's side plugs.

Hey whats up Pete. Just saw you over on therangerstation a min ago. Me personally the 2.8 and 2.9 have the same trans bolt pattern. If my 2.9 ever went out i would swap a 2.8 with the duraspark conversion and an electric pump. I like the little 2.8s. But easiest would be putting a 2.9 back in its place.

Or there is a mod/coversion kit for a little$ and work, bolt up to use same 5speed auto,A4LD,4x4,turbo,trans,if this is what you have and upgrade to aV8 305 or 2.0l,you just need to check your transfer case make sure it's in great shape to handle extra power load n differential's,n gears for same, which i hope my bullsnake will get someday for the shizz n giggles for some more power and for fuel pump needs no conversion just front wireing harness mods for V8 upgrade .

Thats about all i do too. I'm usually giving my 2 cents for tech questions. Ive got two rangers right now. 85 and 89. on 2.8 and one 2.9 so ive been all through these motors. The 2.8 especially since im now rebuilding for the 2nd, thats right 2ND time. ugh. Hopefully this will be the last time and i can enjoy my truck again.

That sucks man, sucks to do a bunch of work and have to retrace your steps. They are decent to work on at least.. '89s are decent too, got the power dist. box, no EGR, single intank pump..
