Not sure if your having this issue still, but mine was doing the same thing. Have you replaced the TFI module on the distributor? Maybe the coil is bad. It could also be the crankshaft position sensor in the distributor. I replaced my whole distributor after testing and finding a bad one in mine. That helped a lot. I just typed something like 2.9 ranger coil test in google and came up with that site. Ultimately I replaced my ECU and It runs perfectly now. But that was a last resort replacement for me.
