Default 86' ford ranger help

So I bought this 86' ford ranger a couple months back, I replaced the motor, etc.. Now I have replaced the alternator and for the life of me I can not figure out what the little white cord goes to. Please keep in mind not to be to harsh as I am learning while building so I am pretty much doing this on my own. And any help would be awesome. Thanks guys

More details will be needed before you can get any real help. What engine are we talking about? And what 'white cord'? Some pictures, of this cord and maybe the engine bay would go a long ways towards getting assistance.
