Default 1990 ford ranger rpm gauge/ engine tick as well

Problems currently: (does need tune up pretty bad)

Daily while driving truck the rpm gauge will be normal, reading fine between shifts ect, but all of the sudden either when I first drive or somewhere on the road it will start reading outrageous rpms. I mean it reads like 3500 to 4k rpms and From the sound of my motor I know im doing at max 2500 rpms. this goes on for a while and will dance back to my normal rpms. One thing ive had issues with sense this started is my truck will stall out. ONCE. just one time per day. usually once I start cooking down the road at about 50 then have to stop for a red light. it will just start running real rough then bog down if I try to gas it up and it will stall.

Dont know if these two things are related. but like I said the stall will happen once. even if I have this thing on a 2 hour drive. or even if I start it up like 8 different times. it will struggle to start back up tho after the stall.

The rpm gauge issue tho, it comes and goes. the first time it started having rpm gauge issues it was running horribly tho, again not sure if related

Other issue: Engine tick/tapping. Not sure why, sounds like coming from heads. Gets horrible during and after highway speeds. sometimes will quiet down. always keep oil at correct levels. any ideas?

Thanks guys if you took the time to read all of this!
