Well if we don't know our maker then our maker is "alien" to us. So I guess as loony as that sounds it's quite literally true.
You can read about how everyone went apeshit at the turn of every century and at every other auspicious little thing since the dawn of self awareness.
Just imagine how early man responded to lightning strikes or earthquakes etc.
