yes this is true. My 97 had a shortend D44 locked w/ 4.56 gears and it has seen anything from the floirda mud to wheeling at tellico, and it had more problems with the 9in rear then anything else. Yes for pretty much just looks and light wheeling, it would prolly be an alright axle. Like as stated, if money is not a big factor beef it up a little and it should treat you very well.
