I did have to put a mount on the top front of each kayak to run the straps through. I was originally running them through the carrying handles, but didnt want to rely totally on that to keep them on..

Both kayaks do fit in the bed either with the tailgate up and tonneau off, or tailgate down tonneau on. Usually we just toss them in the back if we are paddling close to home, or from the campsite to the river/lake. The main reason for the rack was to be able to use the bed for gear and still haul the boats.
