Some temp knobs control a motor electrically and some have a mechanical push/pull cable system. It varies by year and whether or not the truck has A/C or just heat. Either way, the knob directly or indirectly moves the Blend Door which adjusts temperature.

These are two versions of the blend door actuator motor controlled by the electrical type knob shown in Mykhael's picture above:


This is the push/pull cable type:


Going by the symptoms, I would guess that you might have the cable system but I don't know for sure.
