Smile check engine light

HI,
I just picked up a 1995 Ranger XLT yesterday. Drove it about 40 miles. Took it in to Speedy Lube and had the oil changed and the radiator fulshed (water was dirty). Drove it another 40 or so miles and the CHECK ENGINE light came on. I stopped and looked everything over. Seems to run fine, good oil pressure, not overheating, no leaks or tell tale noises. Don't have access to an Autozone here to pull the codes.
Stopped and bought an OBD1 reader for 1981 to 1995 Fords.
Got it home and found out it was for EEC-IV and I have ECC-V. I see the two roung plugs attached to the fuse box under the hood, assume thats the hookup. Someone said that Check engine indicates an emissions problem, don't worry about it, remove the neg btry cable and reset. Would appreciate some input from you experienced Ranger owners. The next thing is to drop it off at a shop. I'm new in this area so will have to call around first.
Thanks.
