Yes they have rebuild kits for them. I changed my diff fluid about 6 months ago before I just did mine. I thought about the same thing. I didn't want to blow the money I just spent on the High dollar royal purple diff fluid I put in so I cut the backing plates off. It was not hard at all to do that way imo. Same amount of time either way. The only other factor I took in to account was if the axle seals were leaking which they weren't. If all that checks out I would leave all that alone and cut the suckers off. Just my thought
