For the engine light, I would suggest a DPFE sensor. I had a 2000 that had an engine light and although the code read as an EGR, it was actually the DPFE sensor that caused the code. I had the same engine you do. Its a small box on the front of the intake with two rubber hoses going from it to the drivers side exhaust manifold area.
